EAT: WAGYU YA, SOUTH YARRA

Calling all beef connoisseurs, this is one beefy affair you will not want to miss. Feast your eyes on Wagyu Ya’s A5 and M9 Tasting Set for two menu. The menu takes premium dining to the next level with its inclusion of Kobe beef among the 8 cuts of wagyu meats and a harvest-once-a-year Matsutake mushroom. There are only two restaurants in the whole of Australia that serve up Kobe beef, and us lucky Melburnians have dibs on one of these thanks to Wagyu Ya. Each quality piece of beef was expertly cooked by a staff member at our table, and immediately served straight to our bowl. Juicy, succulent, with a fragrant char that was just as much a highlight as the beefy flavour of the meat. The Matsutake mushroom had quite a fleshy bite to it, and its flavour unlike any other mushroom I had tried before. We didn’t think it was possible given the high bar met by each of the cuts we tried, but we encountered our ultimate favourite when it came to A5 sirloin - sliced super thin and super marbled, the whole slice set the grill alight with flames. Served on a bed of rice and with an oozy egg yolk, each mouthful was a luxurious delight. We rounded out our meal with a palate-cleansing bowl of OX tongue soup.
