RECAP: KITKAT CHOCOLATORY, MELBOURNE

One of my many favourite things about Japan is their multitude of KitKat flavours. Fortunately, Melburnians can now enjoy the ultimate break; a taste of this flavour diversity and also create their own KitKat flavours thanks to the KITKAT CHOCOLATORY at Melbourne Central.

Since the establishment of KITKAT CHOCOLATORY - Australia's first-ever permanent KITKAT store, the Melbourne Central store has attracted both locals and tourists alike. Creating your very own KitKat is as easy as one-two-three (provided indecisiveness doesn't hit...), with machines set up to take your selections for the chocolate base (milk, dark and white), up to three toppings (think pretzels, potato crisps, pistachio, popcorn, dried raspberries, crushed cookies etc) and finally your packaging (makes for an excellent customised gift). The orders are then prepared by the staff, with a text message sent to alert the customer when their order is ready to pick up.

On the day of my visit, I was taken behind the scenes to watch the chocolate masters in their element and also had the chance to try my hand at creating my own KitKats. Let's just say I have not yet mastered the art of piping chocolate but hey, my creations still tasted great.

A range of limited edition, exotic-flavoured KitKats are also available for immediate purchase in store, and these often coincide with special occasions. We sampled the Easter special: a Hot Cross Bun KitKat bar featuring a tasty blend of milk chocolate, cinnamon and ground nutmeg and currants. Other flavours included:

  • almond brittle & sticky salted caramel popcorn
  • reimagined Australian lamington
  • Japanese maccha & kikusui leaves

Enjoy your break :)
