EAT: PIE THIEF, FOOTSCRAY

The landscape (or rather, food-scape) of Footscray is fast changing, and the landing of Pie Thief is yet another sign that things in the inner western suburb are shifting. But I do have a soft spot for a good pie and pastry, so this I don’t mind too much. Their pies come in several flavours, with party pie-sized versions also available if you’re indecisive and can’t choose between all the tasty-sounding flavours. Thai red curry and lasagne pies, and pork and fennel sausage roll to name a few. This, however, was not an issue for us - options were scant by the time we arrived at 2.30pm on a sunny Sunday afternoon and we took what we could (Thai red curry pie, a steak and cheese pie to go, and chicken parma sausage roll). They were sold out before we could even tuck into our pies (after some photography action, of course) so we definitely lucked out with the timing of our arrival. Earlier, next time.

Upon first bites, the pastry of both the pie and sausage roll impressed - flaky and light with a great amount of crispy bite. Personally, I thought the chicken filling of the parma sausage roll was slightly on the denser and dryer side. The Thai red chicken curry pie on the other hand did not have this issue and its fragrant flavour profile was also nailed perfectly; I would happily return for this pie alone.

Old school favourites like milkshakes, milo and vanilla slice, alongside caffeination options, also make an appearance on the menu.
