EAT: PORGIE & MR JONES, HAWTHORN

Given the saturation of cafes in Melbourne, the once exciting brunch affair has somewhat transformed into a been there, ate that sorta drill. But we persevere… cos on weekends, we brunch. And every so often, we’re rewarded with a brunch fare that actually dishes up the goods when it comes to wow and taste factor. Case and point with our dining experience at Porgie & Mr Jones. Our selection in itself was quite ordinary - plenty of other cafes serve up similar dishes, but the execution and flavour profile of each dish was faultless. The flavours were incredibly fresh, balanced and abundant - each bite continued to wow despite the taste buds knowing what to expect. Porgie’s famous golden folded was incredibly silky, and the accompaniment of chilli jam, goats cheese and herbs formed a delightful blend of flavours that complemented the eggs to a T. It’s no wonder that this is one of their signature dishes. I also chose well when it came to my pick of the soy glazed salmon, featuring a perfectly cooked blushing pink piece of salmon fillet alongside fresh Asian inspired flavours. A treat to eat particularly as the weather warms up… And lastly, our brunch ended on a sweet note with another fan favourite: the french toast. There’s no doubt that first impressions are delivered well before taste thanks to its pleasing aesthetics, but the taste of the airy light toast also follows through, the elements on the plate forming a playground of white chocolate and strawberry notes. Not overly sweet, thankfully, and enjoyable to eat.

Porgies Famous Golden Folded - with chilli jam, goats cheese & soft herbs on toast.

Soy Glazed Salmon - with soba and zucchini noodles, edamame, cucumber, ginger, togarashi and miso vinaigrette.

French Toast - soaked in vanilla anglaise with white choc mousse, caramelised white chocolate and textures of strawberry.
