EAT: DENMARK HOUSE, MELBOURNE CBD

Overseas travel may be off the cards for a little while longer, but the same hiatus thankfully does not apply to our taste buds thanks to Melbourne’s vibrant food scene that celebrates food from all over the globe. Fancy a Danish spread? Look no further than Melbourne CBD eatery Denmark House on a weekday for a tantalising smørrebrød, or open Danish sandwich, spread. The only possible issue you might face is indecision given the extensive selection of toppings AND how delicious they all sounded. We fell into this trap. But we were able to navigate the situation by leaving the decision in the hands of the manager.

On one end of the spectrum, toppings skew towards traditional, like dill cured salmon, herring and Danish salami. On the other end, expect more modern and ‘fusiony’ combos like swicy Korean fried chicken and crispy pork belly. All absolutely delicious and my taste bud really enjoyed the variety. An excellent call leaving the decision in the hands of the more-than-capable, all-knowing manager! I am however left with the niggling thought of what other delicious combos we have missed out on… Needless to say, a return visit is in order to rectify this.

We ended our meal with some Danish desserts, a biscuit-meets-pastry style Danish pastry and a caramelised coconut sponge cake, rounded out nicely with some hot tea.

Our smørrebrød spread:

  • Stege svampe - trio of roasted mushrooms, beet mayonnaise, candied nuts and parmesan

  • Roast beef - with remoulade, pickled cucumber and fried onion rings

  • Stegt kylling - fried chicken Korean style with sweet chilli sauce and pickled radish

  • Fiskefillet - panko crumbed rockling fillet with remoulade and lemon

  • Stegt flæsk - grilled pork belly with pickled fennel and extra crackle

  • Hvidløg rejer - pan seared prawns with pickled asparagus and garlic butter sauce

Drømmekage - caramelised coconut and sponge cake.

Danish pastry.
